Babies and Pets: Growing Together

As a pet lover and a mom, I’ve always felt pets are more than just animals, they’re family. Growing up, we had dogs and they were a huge part of my life. Our first was a Great Dane. I think my mom was inspired by the Marmaduke comics and just like the comics, many hijinks ensued when Kaïs was around. Our love of big dogs continued with Lucas, our St. Bernard. Sam, the only female in the pack, was a Border Collie Lab mix. Sam’s easygoing friendly demeanor made her hugely popular among kids and adults alike in the neighbourhood. Now, as I raise my daughter along with our cat Simon (who is similar in temperament to Sam), I notice the incredible impact he has had on her mental health and development.

Since she was a toddler, Zara and Simon have had this amazing bond. We got him as a rescue and it’s Zara, in fact, who first befriended him and wanted to take him home. I remember when she was younger, watching her learn compassion and patience as she helped him to acclimatize to our home. Like that time she shared her stuffies with him, which was such a sweet gesture, or when she would cuddle with him, showing how gentle she could be. Those little moments had such a big impact on her emotional and social growth, and it’s fun to look back and see how far they’ve both come. Simon now rules the roost and is only too happy to be carried in Zara's arms.

The Benefits

Pets bring a world of benefits to a baby’s development. They’re more than just furry friends; they help babies learn empathy right from the beginning, showing them how to be gentle and caring. Just think about those moments when your baby giggles at a playful pup or snuggles up next to a calm cat, those interactions promote emotional growth and a sense of security. Plus, pets can be a great source of comfort, providing that constant love that helps ease any little anxieties. During Covid, Simon was Zara’s constant companion, sleeping at her feet during her virtual classes.

As a baby grows, they also start to learn responsibility through simple tasks, like helping to feed or brush their pet. These small acts can really build their confidence and show them that their care and attention matter. The bond they form with their pet can lay a strong foundation for understanding relationships and nurturing others.

Tips for Strengthening the Bond Between Your Child and Pet

  1. Start Early: Introduce your baby to your pet as soon as you can. The earlier they meet, the more natural their bond will become!
  2. Encourage Gentle Interactions: Teach your baby to be gentle with their furry friend, soft touches and calm voices will help both of them feel comfortable.
  3.  Involve Them in Care: Even little ones can help with simple tasks, like filling the water bowl, which nurtures a sense of responsibility.
  4. Create Positive Experiences: Encourage safe, fun playtime together. Whether it’s quiet snuggles or gentle games, these moments strengthen their connection.
  5. Capture the Moments: Don’t forget to take photos! Those adorable interactions are memories you’ll want to treasure forever.

Cherishing the Connection

The bond between your baby and their pet is something truly special. It’s in those little moments that lifelong connections are formed, shaping their understanding of love and friendship. Finding ways to cherish these memories is so important. Keepsakes can be a wonderful way to preserve the connection that grows between your kids and their pets.

Turning Memories into Keepsakes

One meaningful way to keep those memories alive is by transforming them into something lasting. Imagine a photo of your baby’s first cuddle with their furry friend or their tiny hand holding a paw, these moments can become keepsakes you’ll cherish forever. Custom jewelry, like a necklace or keychain featuring a beloved photo, lets you carry those memories with you every day.

You can also create personalized keepsakes showcasing your pet’s pawprint, turning it into a beautiful reminder of their place in the family. Whether it’s for yourself or as a thoughtful gift, these keepsakes are perfect reminders of the special bond that grows between your kids and their furry companions.

The Power of Keepsakes

As an artist and a mom, I’ve come to understand the importance of holding onto these memories. Our pets and children grow up so fast, and those special moments can sometimes slip away. That’s why I’m so passionate about creating keepsakes that tell a story, your story. Whether it’s a baby’s first cuddle with the family pet or a pawprint that marks years of companionship, these are the memories that shape who we are.

I invite you to explore our collections and create something truly special, whether it’s for yourself, your family, or someone who treasures their bond with a beloved pet.

Let’s turn those memories into keepsakes that will last forever!
